En Números Vermells

Winemaker Sílvia Puig made the first wines bearing the En Números Vermells label in the year 2008, in a small garage in Torroja del Priorat. Indeed, the term “garage wine” could not be more apt to describe her humble beginnings, since in her first vintage she was able to produce the equivalent of just one barrel of wine.

Born in El Vendrell, Tarragona, Ms. Sílvia Puig arrived in Priorat with his father, Joseph Puig, who after many years working as a wine merchant founded bodega Viñedos de Ithaca in the late 1990s. One of the most interesting wineries of Priorat’s first wave of producers, Viñedos de Ithaca was, among other things, the first to pay attention to the then neglected the Pedro Ximénez variety, from which the winery produced the first ever varietal wine released in the region.

The wines of the En Números Vermells winery are mostly produced with grapes bought to a group of local wine-growers, with whom Ms. Puig has had business relationships since the days of the Viñedos de Ithaca winery. Ms. Puig, who in parallel to her winemaking activity works as consultant for wineries like Clos Figueras, also owns one small vineyard, from which she produces a white wine.

As for grape varieties, the red wines of En Números Vermells are typically made from Grenache and Carignan, usually complemented with variable amounts of Hairy Grenache and Syrah. It is worth mentioning that Ms. Puig uses no Cab. Sauvignon in any of her wines. The white wines are made from White Grenache and Pedro Ximénez.

In 2017, bodega En Números Vermelles relocated to larger premises in Gratallops. That allowed for total yearly production to increase up to 9,000-11,000 bottles, which are sold in the local and global markets. As a side note, Ms. Puig is also the author of the charming drawings that illustrate the labels of her wines.
