Juan Manuel Burgos
The Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos winery (AVAN) crafts Spanish Tempranillo (Tina del País) wines with the utmost respect to traditional winemaking procedures, from their ancient pre-phyloxera grapevines, as well as 20 year-old clones of these unique vines.
The Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos winery currently has 30 hectares of Tempranillo (Tinta del País) grapevines in the municipality of Fuentelcésped, which is inside of the Ribera del Duero. This is not the only winemaking venture of Juan Manuel Burgos, but it is his main venture and this enologist is fully devoted to his art of winemaking. Juan began studding enology in 1992 and he began to restructure his family´s vineyards in 1996.
This winery features both new and old grapevines, but all of these grapevines are Tinta del País and they are situated throughout small plots of land respecting the tradition of Juan´s grandfather. One of the secrets to this winery´s grand success is their pre-phylloxera grapevines are so old that their actual age is unknown. These grapevines are so highly sought after that the Juan Manuel Burgos winery (Bodegas AVAN) in the Ribera del Duero based all of their vineyards from clones of these ancient vines. Undoubtedly, all of the wines by these grapevines and these grapevine clones are very unique and they present the hallmark of this winery.
These grapevines are cultivated with the utmost care to the environment providing for generally more healthy wines. By this means no harmful products or chemicals are used in the cultivation of these grapes and they are cultivated following a strict lunar cycle at both the vineyards and the winery.
The new grapevine clones of the ancient pre-phylloxera grapevines of this winery´s ancestors are cultivated in Goblet systems following their family´s tradition in the Ribera del Duero. These vines realized their first grape harvest in the beginning of October, 2000. Thus the AVAN wine vintage was born with 8,500 bottles being produced with their first vintage by the Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos winery.
All of the AVAN red wines from the Ribera del Duero are aged in crianza between 12 and 18 months. These winery uses seven unique types of French oak barrels as well as a small percentage of American oak barrels for their crianza ageing processes. Therefore, all the wines by this winery are classified as “crianza” or “reserve” by the wine regulating committee of Spain for their natural crianza ageing procedures.
If you´re wondering why the Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos winery is also referred to as AVAN (we admit it is a bit curious), it originates from the Nava River which has secret channels that pass through Fuentelcésped where this winery is situated.
