La del Terreno
Bodega La del Terreno produces minimal intervention wines in DO Bullas, Murcia.
Julia Casado got smitten with wine while she was studying agricultural engineering and cello in Germany. She cut her teeth working for several wineries, like Josef Biffar in Germany, Bodegas Vega Sicilia in Spain, and O. Fournier in Argentina. In 2015, Ms. Casado started her personal project, La del Terreno winery, in DO Jumilla. One year later, she moved to La Cañada del Jinete, an area of DO Bullas within the Sierra de Lavia Regional Park, in the southeastern part of Murcia.
Ms. Casado currently works three parcels of vines with different characteristics, orientations and altitudes. They are planted with local varieties, the most important of which is Monastrell, locally known as ‘La del Terreno’. The vineyards are hand-tended and sustainably managed, using no chemicals or additives whatsoever. The wines are fermented with wild yeasts and mainly aged in traditional recipients such as clay pots, concrete diposits and demijohns. Old wooden barrels are also used, but less frequently.
The wines of the La del Terreno winery from DO Bullas are vinified in a small modular winery designed by Ms. Casado to be energetically efficient and easily transportable and expandable. The resulting wines are pure, untamed and utterly Mediterranean, showing a kind of primal energy that makes them stand out from the pack.
