Luberri - Familia Monje Amestoy
The wines of bodega Luberri-Familia Monje Amestoy pay tribute to the old Rioja tradition.
Florentino Martínez Monje and his wife María José founded bodega Luberri-Familia Monje Amestoy in 1991. The project had started some years before, when Florentino decided to go back to his roots and began to buy small parcels of vines in the area of Elciego, La Rioja, where his ancestors had worked the land for many generations. A family owned and operated winery, bodega Luberri is currently run by Florentino and María José with the aid of their daughters Laura and Mirren.
The vineyards of bodega Luberri-Familia Monje Amestoy occupy around 29 hectares, spread across several areas in region of La Rioja Alavesa. The lowest parcels, with sandy soils, are on the margins of the Ebro river, at 400 metres above sea level. Composed of clay limestone soils, the highest parcels, which look towards the Sierra Cantabria, are where the oldest vines are planted. The main grape variety is Tempranillo, complemented with some Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viura. Viticulture follows traditional methods and non-invasive techniques.
Producing around 350,000 bottles per year on average, the Luberri wines of familia Monje- Amestoy are vinified following the carbonic maceration technique and released onto the market 6, 12, 18 or 24 months after the harvest, depending on the style of the wine.
