Martí Fabra
The Martí Fabra winery presents the grand tradition of winemaking in Empordà to share with the world.
At the beginning of the 1960s, Martí Fabra founded this winery in Sant Climent Sescebes. In 1961 the construction of their winery was completed on this land where this family has been cultivating grapes since the XII century. This new winery was founded with new grapevines as this region had previously been devastated by the unstoppable phyloxera epidemic in Europe.
Martí Fabras vineyards extend along the Sierra de las Alberes Mountain range at 650 feet (200 meters) above sea level. These grapevines are surrounded by natural Mediterranean vegetation in acidic soils that have very good draining potential and that have low levels of organic material. This terroir enjoys a fresh Mediterranean climate with very low humidity thanks to the northern “Tramuntana” wind which also helps to keep the vineyards in excellent health. This terroir and climate is very good for grape cultivation and as a result this winery is able to cultivate these grapes with the maximum respect to the environment with no added chemicals, sulfur, or even the “Bordeaux mix.”
The oldest grapevines at this winery are their Carignan (Samsó) and Grenache (Lladoner) grapevines with ages between 50 and 80 years-old. Over the past 30 years this winery has also began the cultivation of Tempranillo (Ull de Llebre), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel de Frontignan, Chardonnay, Cariñena blanca, Grenache blanc, Garnacha roja, and Picapoll grapes. All of the wines crafted from these grapes are very well-balanced.
The crianza ageing processes at the Bodega Martí Fabra winery of the Empordà D.O. are realized in underground caves below their Catalan “Masía” style facilities. This classic Catalan stone and rock vault has the ideal temperature and humidity for ageing wines.
The Spanish white and red wines by the Martí Fabra winery are characterized as being fruit forward with subtle minerality. These wines are aged in crianza in French oak barrels from Allier between 8 and 18 months depending on the wine and vintage. This winery also produces a rosé wine and all natural dessert wines from Moscatel (Muscat) and Grenache (blanc and Noir).
