Mas Estela
A family-run winery, Mas Estela produces biodynamic wines on the wind-swept hillsides of Cap de Creus.
Founded and managed by the Soto-Dalmau family, the Mas Estela winery is located in the Sant Romà Valley, in the heart of Parc Natural de Cap de Creus, an off-the-beaten-track mountainous area in north Catalonia overlooking the Mediterranean that is the easternmost part of Spain.
Only 3 km away from the Mediterranean, the Mas Estela estate, bought by the Soto-Dalmau family in 1989, has an extension of 50 hectares, in which around 20 hectares of vineyards coexist with 2 hectares of olive trees and over 25 hectares of Mediterranean forest, with pine trees, cork oaks, asparagus plants and aromatic herbs. Besides the maritime influence, the sun-drenched estate is constantly exposed to the Tramuntana, an icy northern wind that prevents vine diseases, increases grape concentration by slow dessication and acts as a natural sanitizing agent.
Focused on traditional varieties, bodega Mas Estela from DO Empordà currently grows Grenache, Samsó (aka Carignan), Grey Grenache (aka Garnatxa Roja o Lledoner Roig), Monastrell, Syrah and Muscat of Alexandria. The vineyards are tended following strictly organic and biodynamic principles.
The Mas Estela wines are dramatic, energetic and savoury. Showcasing the purest and most austere side of the Mediterranean, they are definitely terroir-orientated wines.
