Mas Llunes
A family winery based in the northern area of DO Empordà.
After several years of preliminary work, which basically consisted in recovering old vineyards and planting new ones, the Roig family founded bodega Mas Llunes in the year 2000. The Mas Llunes winery currently owns 80 hectares of vineyards in the village of Garriguella, in the northern area of DO Empordà, not far from the French border. The main red varieties are Grenache and Carignan, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. White Grenache, Macabeo and Muscat are the most important white varieties.
The estate vineyards of bodega Mas Llunes are composed of highly acidic, well-drained soils with low levels of organic matter. Those features, combined with the scarce rainfall, the high summer temperatures and the effects of Tramuntana, a strong northern wind which acts as a natural sanitizing agent and increases the natural concentration of flavours through dessication, unfailingly produce grapes of excellent quality.
With an annual production around 125,000 bottles, which includes red, white and sweet wines, the Mas Llunes project has a bright future ahead. After years trying to understand the characteristics of the Empordà terroir, the winemaking team has finally succeeded in crafing wines that showcase the unique combination of soil, sea and wind which defines the identity of the region.
