Merum Priorati

In 2011, the Pere Ventura Family Estates group founded bodega Merum Priorati in Priorat with the aim of capturing the spirit of one of the world’s most impressive wine regions. The project rests upon four pillars: 1) Respect for the incomparable qualities of a one-of-a-kind terroir; 2) Permanence, based on the desire to take root in the land by building something for the future; 3) Resistence, indispensable for surviving and thriving in the harsh Priorat environment; 4) Attraction, caused by the unquestionable magnetic force emanating from the land.

The estate of the Merum Priorati winery is located in Porrera, one of the historic villages of Priorat. The estate is comprised of three vineyards, each with its own characteristics, with a total extension over 100 hectares.

The biggest vineyard, called Les Foreses, has 85 hectares in total, with 11 hectares under vine. It is planted with the traditional varieties Grenache and Carignan, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, and also the white variety Viognier. The vineyard is composed of the typical llicorella (slate) soils from Priorat, and its altitude goes from 380 to 525 metres.

The second vineyard of bodega Merum Priorati, called Les Escomelles, has an extension of 8 hectares. The smallest one, La Plana Major, is a 1-hectare Grenache vineyard planted in 2002 at 300 metres of altitude.

The wines of Merum Priorati are produced in a state-of-the-art winemaking facility equipped with cutting-edge technology. Since all of the Merum Priorati wines are produced from grapes grown exclusively in the village of Porrera, they are allowed to proudly bear the “Vi de Vila” label on the bottle. Vinification is traditional and very precise. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, after which the wines are aged for variable periods of time in high-quality French oak barrels. The result are wines that are both site-specific and highly polished, with an elegantly tamed intensity and real potential for evolution over the years.
