Mustiguillo

At an altitude of 800 metres, in a plateau situated halfway between the cold city of Teruel and the sunny Valencia seashore, Bodega Mustiguillo works 87 hectares of vineyards amidst an exuberantly Mediterranean tapestry of garrigue, aromatic plants and olive and almond trees. The singularity of the area is such that, in 2010, it was recognised as a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP EL Terrerazo) by the Spanish authorities.

The Bobal grape is the most important one there, though one can also find some Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. An intensely coloured, high-acidic, slightly rustic red variety, when properly farmed and vinified Bobal can produced excellent wines with a remarkable ageing potential. These wines have allowed the winery to join Grandes Pagos de España, Spain's most important association of top-tier wine producers.

The exceptional terroir of the region is defined by an homogenous soil with a basic pH composed of sand and limestone, and a Mediterranean climate with a Continental element. Another key factor is the wind confluence. On the one hand, there are winds coming from the seashore which act as a cooling agent during the hot summer nights. On the other, the warm winds coming from the Castilian interior kept humidity under control.

The red wines by Bodega Mustiguillo are either single varietal Bobal wines, or blends in which the variety plays a dominant role. Currently, the winery produces Mestizaje, a red blend, and Finca Terrerazo and Quincha Corral are both single varietal, estate wines.

As for the white Merseguera variety, the company produces the wines Mestizaje, a white blend made from Merseguera, Viognier and Malvasía, and the crianza Finca Calvestra.
