Pesquera - Familia Fernández Rivera

Pesquera - Familia Fernández Rivera

Bodega Pesquera - Familia Fernández Rivera was key in building the international reputation of Ribera del Duero.

In 1972, after 10 years of hard work, a young Alejandro Fernández released the first bottles of Tinto Pesquera – Alejandro Fernández. A real trailblazer, he pioneered the introduction of modern winemaking techniques in Ribera del Duero, an area which, despite being a world-class terroir, hitherto lacked the technical expertise through which local winemakers could translate in a transparent manner the unique character of the land.

Ten years later, in 1982, the wines of Alejandro Fernández were suddenly propelled into international stardom when Robert Parker said that Bodega Tinto Pesquera – Alejandro Fernández was “Spain’s Château Pétrus”.

Pesquera-Familia Fernández Rivera winery is the mother company of a business group which nowadays includes the following wineries: Condado de Haza, also in Ribera del Duero, Dehesa La Granja, in Zamora, and El Vínculo, in Castilla La Mancha.

Bodega Tinto Pesquera has over 200 hectares of vineyards in Pesquera de Duero, Valladolid. Almost all of the extension is planted with Tempranillo vines up to 40 years of age. Soils are very poor, and climate is Continental.

After the passing away of Mr. Alejandro Fernández in 2021, a long and bitter family feud ensued, as a result of which three of his four daughters took control of the firm and changed its name to Familia Fernández Rivera. Eva Fernández, the youngest of the fourth, severed ties with the family business and started her own winery, which she named Tinto Pesquera Original.
