Rico Nuevo

Rico Nuevo

A project in DO Cebreros-Sierra de Gredos producing site-specific wines from old vineyards.

Founded by Juan Andrés Martín, born in 1991, bodega Rico Nuevo is situated in Burgohondo, a village in Alto Aberche, a historical region in the province of Ávila comprising, besides the said village, the towns of Navatalgordo, Villanueva de Ávila, Navarrevisca and Serranillos. Located at the heart of Sierra de Gredos, the area has an average altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level, a fact that, together with the granitic soils typical of the Gredos mountain range, provides exceptional conditions for growing high-quality grapes.

Despite the fact that 2018 was the first released vintage of Rico Nuevo winery, the project has deep family roots in the area. Felipe Martín, the founder’s great grandfather, nicknamed “Rico Nuevo”, was producing up to 30,000 litres of wine per year in the late XIXth century, which were destined for family consumption and sold at local markets.

To honour the winemaking tradition of the family, Mr. Martín produces wines from recovered vineyards planted with the most representative varieties of the area; the first is Garnacha de Gredos, which covers around 85% of the surface under vine in DO Cebreros, followed by the white variety Albillo Real, covering a 10% of the whole, and other lesser-known varieties.

Critically praised since its debut releases, the wines of Rico Nuevo are vinified in stainless steel tanks, concrete diposits and flextank containers, and aged in old barrels of different capacities. Yearly production is around 40,000 bottles.
