Sierra Norte
The wines of Bodega Sierra Norte aptly combine local and international grapes. The native Bobal is the winery's flagship variety.
Located near an archeological site full of ancient tools which bear witness to ancient Iberian and Roman winemaking traditions, the organically farmed vineyards of the third generation family-owned Bodega Sierra Norte are at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level, on plains nearing the banks of the Cabriel river, in the southwestern Spanish region Utiel-Requena.
The altitude provides the grapevines a vey special microclimate. Though winters are harsh, frost is rare. As for summertime, there is a huge contrast between the extremely high daytime temperatures and the nighttime ones, with differences up to 20ºC. This factor is key in producing fully ripen grapes with an exceptional acidity.
The Sierra Norte winery grows both local and international varieties. Speaking of red grapes, the most widely planted is the structured and tannic Bobal, with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Its best-known wine is Pasión de Bobal. As for the white wines, the winery produces some interesting blends from estate-owned vineyards of Macabeo, White Grenache, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
