Vins Algars
A producer of organic wines from local varieties based in Terra Alta.
Located in the village of Batea, Tarragona, DO Terra Alta, Bodega Vins Algars was founded by the Tarragó Solé family in 1940.
The Vins Algars winery currently owns 32 hectares of vines, which are tended following the guidelines of organic agriculture. The vineyards planted near the banks of the Algars river have rocky soils, and the ones situated on higher areas have clayey soils. The area around Batea has a harsh and demanding climate, strongly influenced by two winds, the dry and cold Cerç -a northwest wind better known as Mistral, its French name- and Garbí, a moist wind blowing from the southeast. The combination of soil types and wind influence gives the wines of Bodega Vins Algars a distinctive personality.
The Vins Algars winery grows mostly local varieties, like Grenache, Hairy Grenache and White Grenache. As of late, the blends have incorporated some small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah sourced from young vines.
All of the viticultural and winemaking operations are performed by hand. The wines of Bodega Vins Algars are vinified in stainless steel tanks, and subsequently aged in French and American oak barrels.
